My workplace was the great british workplace of the day today.....nearly choked on my drink and everyone was screaming with delight-had the radio up full blast!

Awesome! Thanks Absolute you made everyone's christmas at work that little bit more special!

I've not done this in a while so thought i'd put one up and see how it goes........

.....The Basenji!......

Breed history:

Exact origins are unknown but dogs similar to them are dipicted in Egyptian tombs. Their country of origin is however believed to be Central Africa.

They are quiet and graceful dogs who evolved in a warm climate. Their tan colour provides camouflage and the white patches dotted around thier body helps heat tolerance.

These dogs rarely bark but howl much like wolves. They can live to 12 and weigh up to 11kg

The Gordon Setter.......

Black and tan setters existed in great britain in the 1600s. The breed seen today was standised in the 1700s by the duke of richmond and gordon at his home in banffshire in scotland.

This is the heaviest, strongest and slowest of all the setters. Before hunting with guns became popular, this dog scented and found game then sat quietly waiting for the hunter to arrive. Making them a dog of a friendly and relaxed disposition.

This breed is loyal and obdient making great dogs which need long and daily exercise periods!

They weigh up 30kg and live up to 13

The Kurile Island Bobtail!

The Kurile island chain running from the eaternmost point of russia to the tip of japan's hokkaido island is disputed between the two nations.

There was only one widely known bobtail breed the japanese. With the attitude of countries changing such as the soviet union new breeds are emerging, among them is this breed.

Although being a bobtail is a genetic mutation, they survive well. From pre-18th century.

They can weigh up to 4.5kg and vary in colouring- varying tortie colours, smoke, shaded and tipped colours, tabbies, silver tabbies and bi-colours.

The Dachshund....

Daschunds were originally bred to be courageous, tough and persistent in order to hunt badgers and also foxes and rabbits. Their small size and short legs enabled them to dig foxes, badgers, and rabbits out of their dens. Dachshunds were originally bred in Germany for hunting badgers and the name, Dachshund, means "Badger Dog". Daschunds were originally larger than seen today but were bred to be smaller towards the end of the 19th century.

They have a long body in relation to thier short legs with high set tails. They can have short, long or wire type fur and come in any colour apart from white and can live up to 16! .

The Daschund stands 8 to 10 inches inches from the ground to the top of the shoulder and miniature Daschunds stand 5 to 7 inches in height.

The Sphynx.....

The Sphynx although looks completely hairless isn't truely hairless-they are actully covered in short, silky, peach fuzz down. Without the insulating protection of a coat, they are vulnerable to both heat and cold and so must live indoors. Each empty hair follicle has an oil-producing gland. With no hair to absorb the oil, sphynx cats need daily rubbing down with chamois,

Afghan Hound...

The country of origin is Afghanistan-obvioulsy. Afghans are one of the oldest breeds, which date back thousands of years. Some even believe this is the type of dog that accompanied Noah on his Ark! The Afghan Hound is a member of the Greyhound family. Their ancestors were originally from Persia moving to Afghanistan where they worked protecting sheep and cattle. Afghans were once a harsh hunter in their native land where they used to hunt leopard, wolves and jackals.

They have most recently been breed to be an obedient, gentle dog. The Afghan Hound was introduced into the Western world late in the 19th century. In the 20th century the breed was brought to England by the British Captain Banff. He brought a hound named "Zardin", and from there the breed spread into England.

They can live up to 15 and take a lot of time and effort grooming their long elegant coats with a varying range of colours.

The Bengal!

This breed although rare are exretmely beautiful with distinctively thick and luxurious coats. They have wildcat origins so their temperament can vary on the breeding.

The bengal was originally bred by accident by a scientist exploring the asian leopard cat's resistance to Feline leukemia virus. This asian leopard cat was accidentally bred with a domestic cat and the result was the bengal.

Bengal can weigh up to 10kg and were once called Leopardettes.

They vary in colour-Blue eyed snow marbled, brown marbled and brown spotted.

Siamese cats are an ancient breed. Over the years, they have been bred to certain standards, but for the most part they are a natural breed--a breed that grown this way and were not crossed from other breeds.

They have a stunning contrast of our fur colors and rich blue eyes with a distinctive personality and loud distinctive meow.

The first Siamese cats were introduced in Britain in 1884 by a Mr. Gould as a gift for his sister. He imported the two cats from Bangkok and they are the first two Siamese registered in Britain. Many other Siamese were imported into this country during the final years of the century. All cats imported at this time came from Bangkok and so the modern cat as it is known today, is from ancient Siam.

They can weigh up to 5.5kg and have many colours...

The otterhound......

Most likley decended from the bloodhound. Though it could be a cross between large rough coated terriers ancient foxhounds and the french nivernais girffon.

They were bred to enter the coldest river and follow an otter to its den. Now that otters are no longer seen as pests, the otterhound's original job no longer applies.

They are happy dogs with cheerful dispositions who enjoy human companionship, though one sniff of water and they're in there!

They can live up to 12 and weigh up to 55kg with a varying aray of colours.

La perm.....

In 1982, a working farm cat had a litter of six kittens that included a single bald kitten. This kitten survived and at the age of 8 weeks she grew a coat. This coat was curly and soft to the touch, this little kitten was nicknamed 'curly'. Over the next 5 years more curly coated kittens were produced-becoming the basis of this breed.

The cats are born with fur, either straight or curly but at some time in thier lives usually during infancy they lose it becoming completely bald. The new coat that grows back is thick and silky and often curlier.

They are described as working cats and excellent hunters. They can weigh up to 5kg and come in silver tortie tabby, blue, blue cream and cinnamon silver.

Great Dane.....

They are the national dog of Germany who are dignified but affectionate. They orginate from dog brought to Europe by the Alans, a scythain tribe from what now is Asian Russia. These fighting mastiffs were probably crossed with greyhound type dogs to produce an elegant and gentle giant of a dog.

There sheer size brings along with many medical causes, including hip and elbow arthritis and bone tumours.

They can weigh up to 54kg and live to 10.

They can vary in colours, fawn, black, blue, brindle and harlequin.

The snowshoe.....

In the 1960's a philadephia breeder Dorothy Hinds-daugherty began to cross her siamese with american shorthairs.

There remained little known about this cat until the 1980s when it recognised as a breed by the international cat association and are rarely seen.

Its named so by it's characteristis white mittens and are talkative cats with soft meows.

They can be seal, chocolate, blue and lilac
