Just listening to 'Wincing the Night Away' on my way into work this morning. What a good record, one of my favourites this year so far, I think.

Last night I saw the official teaser trailer for His Dark Materials: The Golden Compass. It looks promising and I'm still hopeful for a decent translation into film, despite being slightly discouraged after looking up the director's previous works...

If you still haven't read any of the Dark Materials books, put down your tired Dan Brown story right now and do it.

It's my first day back to work after a nice long holiday and I can see how my VIP points have plummeted as a result!

Firstly my trip was excellent, except for our outbound flight which was delayed by 8 hours (!), everything else was superb. I had several reunions with lots of family, caught up with old friends and took advantage of the great £ to $ exchange rate! I did this by purchasing (amongst lots of other things) a 30gb iPod video.

Which brings me to the next thing - 2 bands I really got into over the break: The Everyday Visuals and Dr. Dog, the latter which I was lucky enough to catch live in Philly, a great great performance. And I managed to capture a few pics to prove it :)

Was nice to come back to some great british weather, hope all's been well in VIP land....

Another night, another great gig

Gig 3 in as many nights and I'm starting to feel it.

Really can't say enough about these lads - except please go and see their passion-fuelled live performance before they disappear back to LA.

Low vs Diamond's headlining show last night at Water Rats saw them playing a packed out venue, topping the whole evening off with the energetic forthcoming single, 'Heart Attack' followed by a poignant new number that prompted lead singer Lucas to swap his mic and guitar with keyboardist Tad's synth.

I think thisislondon.co.uk got it right when it was said this down-to-earth fivesome are not afraid to unashamedly rock. Whatever the case, one thing is for sure, these guys have a great big sound - look for the video to 'Heart Attack' to debut sometime in April on MTV.

Well well my bro and the Low vs Diamond lads are back in Londontown from LA and are in the midst of another UK mini-tour!

In case you missed them supporting Ghosts last time, and The Sounds this week, they'll be doing another round of gigs next week - this time round as headliners!

So if you find yourself free on Tuesday the 27th, please do pop along to Water Rats Theatre near Kings X and have a pint with us, it's a small and intimate sort of venue and the guys do a great job at filling the place out with sound :)

Virgin Radio on your Nintendo Wii

Being the big nerdface that I am, the moment I was able to, I spent some time cruising around the Virgin Radio website to see how it looked on our Nintendo Wii browser. It looked good (as the Wii browser is more or less Opera anyway), but there were still some improvements to be made.

Three months on, and after a suggestion from bigjim, last night I decided to check out the new Virgin Radio player on my Nintendo Wii again.

This time I was thoroughly impressed! The website seems to be for the most part fully optimised for the Wii, even despite some processor limitations presented by rich media content such as flash video ads and the like. It wasn't a problem for the Wii, and I was watching Arcade Fire's Rebellion (Lies) video in our new player in no time!

Speaking of Arcade Fire, tonight is the big gig at Brixton Academy and I can hardly wait!

Oh, and week 5 of not having a cold is almost in the bag!

New Virgin Radio player

Our new player is launching tomorrow, how very exciting!

It now supports video as well, which means music vids and all of our live sessions, all in one place.

I've been using the beta version, released today, and it looks like the peeps upstairs have done an absolute stellar job - so go check it out in all its glory!

Friday!

Today is Friday lunchtime and I feel great. I'm eating a grilled chicken baguette with salad and roasted peppers. For the first time in 4 months I've managed to get through two weeks without being tortuously ill with a cold. w00t!

Yesterday I strolled down to Sister Ray on Berwick St after work with a real urge to buy a CD. I think digital downloads are great, but if you're like me and love nice packaging and the somewhat buzzing atmosphere of small record shops, then a diet of total digitalness can leave you feeling a bit empty. Perhaps it's the nostalgia of sifting through crates of vinyl as a kid, or maybe I'm just materialistic, but whatever the reason, I feel like my £7.99 is worth a bit more in Sister Ray than it is on iTunes.

That being said, I remembered that Radiohead's Jonny Greenwood was meant to be putting out a compilation of dub and reggae tunes, and sure enough it turns out that Jonny Greenwood Is the Controller was released on 19 Feb in the UK so I promptly picked up a copy.

Being a great fan of dub and the like, I think this album is a brilliant compilation, featuring a whole slew of superb dub and reggae artists and tunes which come largely from the 70s.

I give it 4*, only because I'd love to have heard not just a compilation from Mr Greenwood, but also his own take on the genre with some original tunage.

Today it is dark and rainy and slightly cold and we think that is not so nice.

It might be a good day to listen to Elliott Smith or Thom Yorke or something whilst eating a jacket potato with beans and/or cheese and possibly a bit of 'slaw on the side.

But not Snow Patrol. Oh no we couldn't bear that.

Not even on a day like today.
