For Immediate Release: June 26, 2009

Re: Psychologist Pens "Bittersweet" Tribute to Michael Jackson: Addresses psychological significance of star's life/death

Canadian-born Californian singer/songwriter/psychologist, Dr BLT has penned a song about Michael Jackson called "Goodbye Michael Jackson (Bittersweet Legacy)" that offers a social psychological perspective on Michael Jackson as a pop culture phenomenon. The song brings out Jackson's demons and alleged demons as well as his triumphs.

It can be heard here:

Goodbye Michael Jackson (Bittersweet Legacy)

Dr BLT

words and music by Dr BLT copyright 2009

http://www.drblt.net/music/GoodbyeMJDemom.mp3

A full-length version is available here:

http://www.drblt.net

And psychological commentary and discussion on the subject is offered here:

Psychology Comes Alive

http://www.psychologycomesalive.com

For more information:

Contact Dr BLT at:

drblt@drblt.net

I’ve written and recorded two brand new songs as a way of reminding Americans (and especially hard-core liberals who seem to have a short memory when it comes to that) of the events of 9/11, and the need to keep this country safe from the ongoing threat of terrorism.

The songs have been newly added to the ever-expanding online edition of the CD, One September Mournin’, featured her in the Sacramento Bee, http://www.sacbee.com/static/live/news/anniversary/psychologist.html

Widow in the Wake of 9/11
Words and music by Dr BLT copyright 2008
http://www.drblt.net/music/Widow4Demo2.mp3

The American Dream
Words and music by Dr BLT copyright 2008
http://www.drblt.net/music/AmericanDream3Demo2.mp3

For more information on the One September Mournin’ CD, visit the following site and hit the “music” link:
http://www.drblt.net

I think the heatwave in California might have been an unconscious motive for me doing a re-make of this classic from the 80s. Visit Art of the Mix to hear it, in its entirety.

This song is really gaining steam. I doubt if it will be named #8 best song of the year like Neil Young (Have you Forgotten), a song of mine was named back in 2006, but I hope it will find its way into a few hearts.

Make comments here, rate it and/or make comments there. Where?

Here:

http://www.artofthemix.org/FindAMix/getcontents.asp?strMixID=119678

It's from my forthcoming CD, 8Tease, and it can also be found on Running for Cover, the CD featured here:

http://www.drblt.net

Without your feedback, I'm totally lost, like a boat without an anchor. Let me know what you think.

I'm working on getting Homer Joy (who wrote the Streets of Bakersfield) to sing with me on a new recording of this song. He said he wanted to help out with my forthcoming music/spoken word CD "any way he can." It connects two streets and two legends.

From Buck Owens Blvd. to Merle Haggard Drive

Words and music by Dr BLT copyright 2008

http://www.drblt.net/music/FromBuckDemo2.mp3

from Buck Owens Boulevard to Merle Haggard Drive

There are a lot of stories to be told

I'd like to round up the few remaining

Country pioneers

And listen to their stories 'till I'm old

From Buck Owens Boulevard to

Merle Haggard Drive

There has been some heavy miles put in

From songs about livin' in these streets

And about the day I found out you were gone

Chorus:

It ain't easy

It ain't easy

You've got to pay your dues

Until the day you die

From Buck Owens Boulevard to

Merle Haggard Drive

You've got to learn to

Keep yourself alive

From Buck Owens Boulevard to

Merle Haggard Drive

There are lots of bumps along the way

'cause people will ignore you

And they won't say they adore you

They'll just turn there heads

When you get up to play

But from Buck Owens Boulevard

To Merle Haggard Drive

You will learn the secret of success

From Merle, Homer, Ferley, Buck

Billy, Bunky too

Thank God you will learn from all the best

(chorus)

It seemed like the perfect metaphor to depict my life. I was clearly under the weather, but couldn't miss this for the world. I was attending the official street naming party for Merle Haggard and the ceremony was wrapping up. I had my open pen in hand and my Merle Haggard's 16 Big Hits CD out. I was determined to secure Merle's autograph at the end of the ceremony. I was on a roll, already having secured the signatures of attendees/Bakersfield Sound heroes, Sonny Langley, Billy Mize, Hank Decate, and Naf Nutter.

Merle was on his way off the stage and heading towards the Harley Davidson showroom. I handed him the CD and the pen, and he gripped both firmly in his hands. Then, suddenly, much to my dismay, he was thrust forward by his wife and a couple of other members of his entourage. He did manage to reach back and hand me the CD, unsigned by him, but he kept the pen. So I left without that autograph I longed to secure, but with a story that I would put in this song as soon as I got home.

The moral of this story is one I often repeat: When handed a lemon, make lemonade. I hope you enjoyed the story, and I hope you enjoy it told in this song.

Later that night, I attended his performance at the Fox. He didn't disappoint. It was one hell of a show!

The Day Merle Haggard Stole My Pen
http://www.drblt.net/music/DayMerleDemo2.mp3

Dr BLT copyright 2008

It was a day

like any other

except for one thing

it was the day

they named a street

after a man

who was a legend in this town

Chorus:
it was the day

Merle Haggard Drive

was named for the man and his legend

right near my house

just 'round the bend

it was the day Merle Haggard

stole my pen

I tried to get

his autograph

he grabbed my pen

and my Merle CD

but then his folks

pulled him away

he walked away

with my new pen

(chorus)

It's not a bad song, is it? It's not a bad theology, is it? After all, isn't this exactly what the Bible teaches? What about this little story from the New Testament that I've quoted above? Now some would say I'm making a mockery of the grace of God, but the Bible clearly teaches that our "righteousness," amounts to nothing but "filthy rags" in the eyes of the Lord.

The more you try to please God, and the more you try to get to heaven, on the basis of good deeds, and the circumventing of bad deeds, the further you will fall short of the glory of God.

Does this mean that good works should be shunned? Heavens, no! But such good works, should come from the overflowing gratitude in our hearts for the abundance of God's grace. While we were yet sinners, he died for us. He did not die for good people. He died for bad ones. He was not the only man on the cross, and to the one who asked him how he could be saved, Jesus replied, "Today you will be with me in paradise." You will find the song on my forthcoming CD, Altar'd Hymns. The SIngle sample has been uploaded.

The lyrics appear below.

STAY TUNED AT:

http://www.drblt.net

You've Gotta be Bad (to Get to Heaven)

Dr BLT copyright 2008

some say to get to heaven

you gotta be good

you've got to never break the rules

act like you should

but that's not what the good book

tells me

and I've read it more than a tad

No it says,

You've gotta be bad

some try to follow rules

act squeaky clean

are self-righteous fools

know what I mean?

No, I'm not sayin'

you should go out and sin more than you have

but the good book says

you gotta be bad

you've gotta be bad to follow Jesus

or there's nothin' to forgive

you gotta depend upon his goodness

if you want to really live

no, I'm not sayin' to continue

'cause in the end, you'll be so sad

but to enter those gates

you've gotta be bad

Dr BLT's CDiary

1.31.08

I was in third grade at Woodlawn Elementary School in Steinbach, Manitoba. That's in mid-western Canada and its the town where I was born.

I believe I was nine. Her name was Lori Quaker. She had blonde hair and blue eyes. I was too shy to tell her how she made me feel, so I wrote a note. It was short and to the point. It simply said, "Lori is sweet." I couldn't drum up the courage to give the note to her myself, so I asked Abe, this kid I thought was my friend, to pass it on to her.

He passed it on alright, to nearly everybody in the school. She was the last to receive it, but it eventually got to her. She was flattered. We were an item for a few weeks. Then one day I saw her with another boy. I walked up to the two of them, and she didn't try to hide it. She simply said, "Bruce, I'd like you to meet my other boyfriend."

That was the moment my heart broke. And it was the moment I knew that I was a one-woman man and needed a one-man woman. How did my heart heal? I'm sure I tried various methods of easing the pain, but the only one that seemed to work was the passage of time.

How about you? Tell us about your first broken heart. How did it feel? How did it heal? Or has it?

You know the rules of my blog n roll game. I provide the music, an opening statement and you provide the comments, links etc.

Ready....set.......blog n roll!

PS: I recorded this version of the song on January 31, 2008. It will appear on a forthcoming CD entitled Shattered Valentines.

I wrote it just before Valentines Day, 1993, in an effort to heal a broken heart. I performed it at a place called Java Jazz in Bakersfield. It was a wonderful place but no longer exists. Members of the crowd insisted that I perform it again right after I performed it the first time, so I did.

Stay tuned (literally) at:

http://www.drblt.net

Shattered Valentine (original version)

http://www.drblt.net/music/ShatValACDemo2.mp3

Dr BLT

words and music by Dr BLT copyright 2008

knees in North Dakota

ankles in LA

I'm a shattered valentine

mouth in Mississippi

nose is in Bombay

I'm a shattered valentine

since you broke my heart

and you messed with my mind

since you broke my heart

I'm a shattered valentine

arms in West Virginia

trunk in Tennessee

I'm a shattered valentine

knuckles in north of Jasper

elbows in D.C.

I'm a shattered valentine

since you broke my heart

and you messed with my mind

since you broke my heart

I'm a shattered valentine

what will I do if I ain't got you

where will I go, oh lord

I just don't know

where will I find myself?

in pieces, lost in time

you'll find that I've been shattered

like a shattered valentine

eyelids in New Brunswick

Lips in Hudson's Bay

I'm a shattered valentine

can't get myself together

since my baby went away

I'm a shattered valentine

since you broke my heart

and you messed with my mind

since you broke my heart

I'm a shattered valentine

Over the long weekend, beginning on Saturday, January 19th, I took a trip with my wife and 2 1/2-year-young daughter to Sacramento. I made a pilgrimage to 19th and J to begin work on my new CD, 19th and J (The Place I Used to Play).

When we arrived in Sacramento, it was cold as hell (oh yeah, I've been told hell is actually rather hot), well you get my drift (or should I say, "draft"?)

We went to one of our favorite restuarants on Saturday night: Bucca de Beppo's. Then we hit the Arden Fair Mall and did some serious shopping. We don't have any decent malls in Bakersfield.

On Sunday morning, I went to Starbucks, and then to Noah's Bagels on 19th and J and met up with my friend Joe, a man I have known for years whom I refer to as a "permanent fixture" at Noah's.

I wrote a song called The Place I Used to Play as I sat in the cold in front of Noah's Bagels. I didn't have a pen to "pen" the song with (pardon the pen pun), so I borrowed one from the manager of Noah's. The song came to me quickly, as most do when I feel inspired (which is most of the time).

After working on my forthcoming CD, I took my wife and daughter out for breakfast at the Tower Cafe, another one of our favorite resturaunts. We hit all of our favorite spots over the weekend and I returned to 19th and J the following morning to write a couple more tunes (I'll share those later).

In the meantime, here's a sample to what will be the title track on:

19th and J: The Place I Used to Play

Dr BLT copyright 2008

http://www.drblt.net/music/PlaceDemo2.mp3

Here are the lyrics:

this is the place I used to play

right here on 19th Street and J

whether skies were blue

or whether grey

this is the place I used to play

started back in 2006

ened in 2000 and one

I got rather serious

when I wasn't having fun

and I wrote new songs

and I played new songs

when the governor was old and Gray

on the local news

and MTV with Cake

for goodness sake

this is the place I used to play

this is the place I used to play

but now those days are gone away

Rolling Blackouts and the crazy guy

who threw hot coffee in my eye

and I wrote new songs

and I played new songs

when the governor was old and Gray

on the local news

and MTV with Cake

for goodness sake

this is the place I used to play

Noah's Bagels

and Starbucks

some days I was out of luck

made some friends

every now and then

as I sat in the same old chair

at the place I used to play

and I wrote new songs

and I played new songs

when the governor was old and Gray

on the local news

and MTV with Cake

for goodness sake

this is the place I used to play
