With gas prices in the states skyrocketing, I've been looking into taking our local transit. I live three miles from where I work, which, happily enough is next to our local transit station...should be easy to just hop a bus and have a glorious five minute trek into town. Riiiiight. If I were adventurous, I 'd ride a bike. I'm not a very good bicyclist (balance impaired) but practice makes perfect, they say.

Anybody know good bicycling songs? I can think of Queen's "I Want to Ride My Bicycle" and that's about it.

Which means Rodrigo and Gabriela:

A Mexican guitar duo from Ireland! I love classical guitarists and these two certainly know how to get the body moving. They rank right up there with my other favorite guitarists-Segovia & LAGQ (Los Angeles Guitar Quartet).

They are also in the top 10 new bands best album of the year in Rolling Stone magazine (mexico) along with Artic Monkeys , Raconteurs & Lupe Fiasco.

I hear them on the radio over here...it's time I think to invest in their album.

Okay-- they're coming to Seattle. I've got to see their show!

Brandi Carlile

I've just heard a fanastic artist from the Seattle area--Brandi Carlile. Warning: If you're taking a gander at work, make sure your speakers are muted--her new single plays without prompting.

It's impossible to pigeon hole her into a genre: Rock, pop, country, it's a veritable Long Island Iced Tea--it's mixture of who knows what, goes down smooth , and it packs a wallop.

Who is Nada Surf you ask?

Ok, I can't be the only VIP who likes Nada Surf. It's my duty to spread the Nada Surf goodness. *salutes*

They're often compared with Death Cab for Cutie--so if you like a mellow band with killer lyrics, then you're going to love Nada Surf. My favorite album is Let Go, released in 2003. Their newest, The Weight is a Gift, has also received rave reviews.

One of my favorites from Let Go is 'Inside of Love'. I'm not into the chez cheezay sappy songs (i.e. anything by Five for Fighting), but this track...well, for all of us still searching, Matthew Caws captured our longings and put it to music.

Moving on--I saw them in concert just over a year ago and I couldn't believe how brilliant they were. They sound exactly like their recording--no horrible off key moments--, not to mention they're charismatic and interact well with the crowd. We stayed after the show and met the band. If you have a chance to see them in a small venue--DO IT. Then bat your eyelashes at security so you can stay after closing. It really pays to be a girl. *happy sigh*

Power outages

The power went out at work today. One minute I'm doing area take-offs, the next minute I'm plunged into darkness, shuddering at the cries of anguish echoing through the halls from my co-workers who have lost hours of work. Lucky me, I wasn't working on anything that needed saving, but my supervisor could have frozen Medusa with his scowl.

Bright side--(no pun intended) it's an excuse to congregate in the halls.

I’ve been encouraged to start a blog so you all can see what goes on inside my head… (thanks, df) I guess I’ll start with a little bit about me. I’m a Yank with a yen for indie music. I have a large extended family—siblings and step-siblings alike and we all live within a few hours of each other-- either by car or by plane. I share a flat with my twin sister. I’m also a very proud Auntie of a twin nephew & niece. I’m a commercial landscape estimator--sounds fancy doesn’t it?--, though I’ve recently become the interim residential estimator. One of my co-workers says I have the patience of a saint to put up the three ring circus of our designers. (I guess my make-up covers the bruises from beating my head against my desk). Ironically, I took a personality test and I’m 43% Mother Teresa. I was also 23% George Washington with bits and bobs and odds and ends making up the other percentage. I’m especially pleased about George Washington as I’m a descendant of his. Silly, I know, but I’m easily entertained. Anyone else have interesting ancestors?
