Bid an emotional farewell to JK and Joel this weekend as Sunday is their last radio show on Absolute Radio.

They are to be replaced with Jo Russell on the weekend lunchtime shows.

Vodka brand sues Absolute Radio

The owner of Swedish vodka brand Absolut has launched legal proceedings against Absolute Radio, the rebranded Virgin Radio, for infringement of its trademark.

Drinks company V&S Vin&Sprit, which owns the Absolut vodka brand and Absolut Tracks music project, has issued a writ against Absolute Radio for trademark infringement and "passing off" - misrepresenting its services as those of Absolut.

The firm has claimed that consumers are likely to be confused over the use of the similar names and that Absolute Radio could be detrimental to its vodka brand.

A spokeswoman for V&S Vin&Sprit confirmed it launched proceedings.

"The reason for this is that we consider there is a risk of confusion," she said. "We have a well known brand and there is an obvious risk of confusion between Absolut vodka and Absolute Radio.

"We have filed a complaint and now we go into the legal process."

Virgin Radio announced last month that it would rebrand as Absolute after it was bought by the Times of India group for £53.2m in June.

The Virgin Radio brand name reverted to founder Richard Branson as part of the deal.

Absolute Radio shares a name with its new management company, Absolute Radio International.

As part of the legal action, V&S Vin&Sprit has issued a writ to force Absolute Radio International to revoke its trademarking of the name Absolute Radio International, which it trademarked in 2003.

Absolute Radio said it would fight the action and was confident of winning.

A spokeswoman said: "We absolutely believe that the two brands can exist alongside each other and that our 5 million listeners can distinguish between a vodka brand and a radio station.

"We hope for a swift resolution to this situation and remain 100% committed to our exciting plans for Absolute Radio."

As part of the station's rebranding, Absolute Radio today unveiled the first of a series of nine TV commercials featuring Hollywood actor Jordan Prentice which are due to run 500 times this weekend reaching an estimated 25 million people.

Goodbye early mornings!

So it's goodbye from me!

From Wednesday morning, that will be it for me at Absolute radio! I've had a great time with you in the early hours over the last 9 months and a fantastic 7 years at Virgin Radio... (although I'm looking forward to normal sleeping paterns!)

I'm sure I'll see you around at some point, but in the meantime Jo Russel and Allan Lake will be taking over the earlys between 4-6am every weekday... (oh yeah, it takes two people to fill these shoes!)
Anyway, treat them well - they'll do a great job - and enjoy discovering more at Absolute!

The Geoff Show is no more!

After just under three years of cheering up the nation with their quirky and eccentric style of humor, the show was pulled short to make way for the new, "Hometime Show".

The show has been on-air since 3rd January 2006 and has had many features come and go.

Past features include:

The Dead of the Night.The Shitting Forecast. The Dirty Book at Bedtime. What the Hell are we going to do on Monday night's show? A game with a fellow DJ. Night fever. You Say It's Your Birthday, It's My Birthday Too, Yeah! The Sensual Olympics.

The features that run up until the final episode were:
Podications. Phone In topics. Porting Controversy. Drunk Versus Stoned. The Big 'I Am...'. Annabel's Letter. Nelson's Special Offers.

Phone in topics on the final show included:
"Did you ever catch your parents having or talking about sex"? "What weird way do you usse to communicate with your pet(s)"? "Does your pet lead a double life"? "Shyness is nice..."

Porting controversy on the final show was entitled:

"The Beatles are really great".

As you can imagine what with Geoff being such a massive Beatles fan is was difficult for him to mutter the words "Well done Annabel! Good point, well made".

Drunk Versus Stoned on the final show was played by:

Drunk Gail in Staffordshire (1 point).
Stoned Tony in London (3½ points).

The return of "You Say It's Your Birthday, It's My Birthday Too, Yeah!".

If you like the sound of synths and the beat of a drum machine, or if you get a sense of melancholy when your hand accidentally brushes over the shoulderpads of that sequinned jacket you’ve sworn to the back of the cupboard, then you may want to tune in to Absolute ‘80s.

Neil Francis will be hosting a three hour show every Friday night from 7pm dedicated to the hits from the decade when over-crimped, over hairsprayed hair was a thing to applaud, rather than a thing to recoil from in horror.

Geoff!! On Drivetime?

Yes it's true! Geoff, Annabel and Nelson will be making the Drivetime slot their new home. On the one hand it's great that Geoff, once again, can be enjoyed by a larger audience on his early evening show, but will features such as "Drunk vs Stoned" still remain as the show will be broadcast before nine o'clock.

I expect the changes will begin either next week or the week after.

Is this a good move for Geoff and his symposium?

Tony Hadley to leave Virgin!

How does anyone say goobye to a legend? Tony Hadley is just that. No ’80s tv documentary passes without his face within, singing those great songs which spell out that decade to a generation. For almost two years now, it’s been a privilege to have had him on the schedule, most recently hosting Party Classics on both Friday and Saturday evenings. Now, our changes mean that we will be saying farewell to Tony; and I know that it will be a sad one, given he is such a popular, genuine and enthusiastic figure in the building.

The plan going forward is to echo our weekday ’80s offerings at the weekend in a new music-intensive show called ‘Absolute 80s’ on a Friday night, with Neil Francis. Then on Saturdays from 6.00 p.m Leona Graham will be hosting a special ‘Absolute Classic Rock’ show, part of our strategy of showcasing the digital brands on the main station.

JK and Joel and Robin Burke are set to leave Virgin Radio as the handover to Absolute begins. After just under a year JK and Joel are leaving to do television stuff and Robin Burke will be leaving, after seven years, to make way for a new DJ, Jo Russell.
