....If I just lay here.

Hello Peeps! Yes, I know it’s been a few days since I last inflicted a blog on the site but I have good reasons. I am a shift worker. Over the next 8 days my life goes something like this…..I overdose on the many forms of caffeine that are currently available legally, I am comatose during the day like a hibernating squirrel in my soft duvet lair while my curtains shield the autumnal sunlight, I eat breakfast at dinner time & visa versa & I live two days at a time, constantly thinking is it today or tomorrow….???Last night was no exception. I arrived at work in my 4th day dozed state full of red bull and pro plus. I was in possession of my litre bottle of water looking like a urine sample as it had been laced with berrocca along with my cool bag of my 3am super food snacks - goji berries, a banana & a grilled chicken salad.  I wondered what Thursday night had in store for me. I pondered at the thought of giving it all up & opening a quaint little coffee shop by the sea. I calculated how many days I had to wait until my Xmas holiday to Barbados. I worked out how many hours in overtime I had to execute to pay for it. I traipsed up to my locker, pulled a shirt out & got dressed. My heavy sleep deprived body headed down to the staff room to meet my colleagues who now resembled the cast of Michael Jackson’s Thriller. We all sat slouched & in unison rested the polystyrene cups on our bottom lips occasionally taking a sip of the flavourless coffee. It’s like the week of night shifts don’t exist in real life. I never remember them afterwards and I’m always surprised when they come around again. They don’t feel real. I would never normally find a quiet spot in central London to catch 40 winks and not mind that my colleague snored gently. Or think, “Is he listening to me whistle through my nose?” And this is when I realise how much I love my job and the people. Who else would pass no judgement or comment if I grunted sweetly during a kip after my kebab and chips carb coma??!! Sod goji berries.  Stuff your super foods Gillian McKeith. I’ve got a large helping of chilli sauce and friends to get me through the graveyard shift. What more could I ask for??? A diet coke please, my body’s a temple….. Much LoveTACOMA GIRLxxx

Whilst in the RAF we used to do from 5pm til 8am 4 nights on the trot, then one day off, then 4 days 8am to 5pm and 4 days off. I loved climbing into bed in the morning trying to prolong the moment before dropping off by reading a book. Only needed 5 or 6 hours to wake up totally refreshed.

Hi girl, oh yes I know how you feel. I did the rotating nightshift myself when I worked in a hospital a few years back. It is a killer because I could not sleep either because I always seemed to be doing surgery! I do not miss those days at all.
