so here's the thing. i'm a harry potter fan. my friends and i have all devoured the books over and over in the last 8-10 years. while there are those who wonder what all the fuss is about (and they'd be well within their rights to express their opinions), personally, i think rowling is a pretty good storyteller. the hero's journey has always captivated people -- we're all on that journey, one way or another -- and she's been able to make it interesting, compelling, and fun.

the 7th, and last, book is coming out (everybody and their mother must be aware of it on some level -- the hype has been insane) this weekend and finally we get to see good triumph over evil, albeit after much suffering, death and tears.

sounds dramatic, huh? =) can't help it, sorry =) the wizarding world may be far removed from our reality but their troubles aren't.

anyway, i'm getting my book at the crack of dawn on saturday before heading to work. after toiling in the corporate concrete jungle i'll find a secure, isolated spot, turn off my mobile, forego sleep, and read. hopefully i'll remember to eat. and i'm packing some kleenex. sniff.

I'm off to a beach wedding this weekend -- my first real summer break just as the season is winding down here in the philippines!!! pathetic. the rains have begun but seeing as i live in a tropical country there's a pretty good chance we'll get some sun this weekend.

ANYWAY, this whole wedding business got me thinking about the kind of music they play at wedding receptions. i've been to receptions where the guests danced to the standards (i.e. sinatra, bennett, mathis and recently, buble), disco/pop (c'mon, don't tell me you've never shaken your booty to abba's dancing queen at least once in your life), 80s punk, 80s pop (there are few things more amusing than seeing people in formal wear suddenly jump from their seats and tear onto the dancefloor when 'walk like an egyptian' comes on).

too many people have played peter gabriel's 'in your eyes' too many times at too many weddings. personally, i'd rather kick off the sandals, dig my toes in the sand, and dance to red rain.

what would you like to dance to at a wedding?

taking a break from work, posting my very first blog which will probably be a load of nonsense seeing as i have no idea what to write about.

so instead of subjecting whoever is reading this to further torture, i'll just post one of my favorite poems. hopefully the next time i post a blog it will be more substantial. and related to music. heeheehee.

Either you will
go through this door
or you will not go through.

If you go through
there is always the risk
of remembering your name.

Things look at you doubly
and you must look back
and let them happen.

If you do not go through
it is possible
to live worthily

to maintain your attitudes
to hold your position
to die bravely

but much will blind you,
much will evade you,
at what cost who knows?

The door itself
makes no promises.
It is only a door.

Adrienne Rich, Prospective Immigrants Please Note
