Liverpool acoustic folk duo TJ & Murphy may have only been playing together for less than 2 years, but in that time they have carved something of a niche for themselves. Having played over 160 gigs in the northwest alone, as well as having busked their way around Europe, their debut album, ‘Weary Nights’ released last summer and launched at Mathew Street’s View Two Gallery, picked up a clutch of favourable reviews, proving that their reputation as a live act was no fluke.

With intricately carved songs that interweave around delicate melodies and harmonies, TJ & M have played live sessions on BBC Radio Merseyside, Manchester, Cheshire, Pembrokeshire and Cambridge, amongst others.

On April 6 2009, they will join with celebrated acoustic guitarist Nick Harper at Telford's Warehouse, Chester, in a special evening to raise funds for the Love Hope Strength Foundation, a charity formed by musician Mike Peters of The Alarm to raise funds and cancer awareness globally.

This is a special night in particular for TJ, since his own mother has been fighting breast cancer, being treated at the Linda McCartney Centre. They, like Nick, felt they wanted to do a little more than just put a few coins in a tin, and this is one way of showing it.

Says TJ: I think I’m right in saying there is nobody that has not been affected by cancer in one way or another. My family were first affected when my grandmother was diagnosed with breast cancer many years ago. I being younger then was devastated by the brutality this disease bestowed upon her. In the end taking her life.

So you can imagine my thoughts and feelings in finding out my mother had been diagnosed with breast cancer. Thank God she was treated in time and saved. The many marvellous people and organisations that are uniting people in the fight against this wicked disease saved her. To win any fight we first must know our enemy, how they think and how they work.

That’s where the Love Hope Strength Foundation come into it. An international, music centric cancer charity dedicated to providing support for cancer centres and inspiration to those affected throughout the world. They are a group of musicians who are creating awareness by doing gigs in high places!

The more people who sing this important message the louder it becomes, and the more it will resound across the land. There is no better place to transmit this message than from the rooftops of the world!

Nick Harper is a virtuoso guitarist whose unique style, distinctively soulful voice and passionate delivery combine for a live performance that is at one spontaneous, enthralling and emotionally-charged. Biting satire, charmingly caustic wit and covers of anything from Zappa to Zeppelin, place Harper a league apart from anyone you may have seen or heard before.

He’s worked with artists as diverse as Dizzee Rascal, the Levellers, Jimmy Page, Squeeze and, of course, his father, the celebrated folk artist Roy Harper.

And played on stages from Glastonbury and the Royal Albert Hall, to Base Camp, Mt Everest and on the High Andean Inca Trail at Machu Picchu – the latter two in 2007 and 2008 respectively were treks undertaken for the Love Hope Strength Foundation.

A folk troubadour. An acoustic balladeer. With a touch of rock’n’roll on the side. As one journalist commented: “Go and see this man live and then you will fully appreciate the intense virtuosity of his guitar-playing, his soulful singing, the intimate brilliance of his song-writing and the bloody funny way he puts it all across.”

Says Nick: In early 2007 a mutual friend recommended Mike Peters to get in touch with me to talk about a foundation he had set up with US rock business dude James Chippendale to fight cancer.
