Manchester's Hacienda broke the mould from conventional clubs in the 80's, and was created at the start of the Rave scene by Tony Wilson, Rob Gretton and New Order. With the likes of the Happy Mondays, Blur, Oasis, James and The Smiths to name but a few, this was the heart of the Indie, House, and general dance scene of the time. Its steel and flourescent colours were a revolution in club design and it must have been a magical experience to be there. The building is still standing with graffiti on the outside but what a shrine this is to an era we will never forget.
The Home of the Manchester “indie Scene” The Hacienda opened in May 82 in the heart of manchester by the great Tony Wilson The club put on live concerts featuring a who's who of stars including The Smiths, OMD, Echo and the Bunnymen, Madonna, the Happy Mondays, James, Oasis, Blur and many others .But its prime, its heyday, came in the mid and late 1980's when it popularised the new dance craze, "House", and became the most famous club on the planet. DJ's such as Mike Pickering (later of M-People), Graeme Park and Dave Haslam played to a packed house. The rhythms in the club appealed to the city's indie bands and resulted in the phenomena of "Madchester" Truly a Great British Rock Pilgrimage
Founded by Factory Records and New Order in May 1982, The Hacienda was the birthplace of "Madchester" and the acid house music revolution. At it's height, Newsweek magazine dubbed it the most famous club in the world. The Hacienda closed in 1997, and was demolished 18 months later to be replaced by trendy inner-city appartments. The club still lives on in those who went there - the perfect club in the right place at the right time. It's walls had once echoed the sounds of The Smiths, The Happy Mondays and New Order at the height of the Manchester scene in the mid eighties. Later, Ecstacy changed the club forever, as clubbers packed its dancefloor to the beat of House and Techno.Drugs and violence eventually caused it's closure in 1991, however, it successfully re-opened and continued until The Hacienda's doors were finally closed for good in 1997.
