Made famous because this is the only spot in the UK that Elvis Presley ever touched down on. He was finishing his American Army national service, and he stopped off for two hours here. edit
Many people will remember the airport for Elvis? visit in 1960. In 1968, Elvis told Scotty moore that he would like to tour Europe with the band. Sadly that never happened for him. In 1993 Scotty decided to fulfill the dream for him. In 1999, during their Scottish leg of the tour, they visited Prestwick Airport. Scotty opened a plaque commemorating the fact that this was the only piece of British soil that Elvis visited in 1960 enroute home to the US for discharge from the army.
It was 3 March 1960 and Elvis enjoyed his only visit to the UK on a stopover at Prestwick International Airport. The King was returning to the US after serving in the military and spent a full 60 minutes on Scottish soil. Today Elvis fans from all over are drawn to the airport and there's even a Graceland bar to get 'all shook up' in and toast the most influential and enduring artist in the history of rock 'n' roll.
The only place that Elvis touched in the United Kingdom.
