Opened in 1966, the speakeasy has easily earnt its right to be a pilgrimage. Having featured the likes of Jimi Hendrix, Bob Marley, David Bowie and Pink Floyd, its easy to see why. edit
Situated just north of Oxford Circus on Margaret Street, the Speakeasy opened in 1966 and soon became awash with musicians. Hendrix performed a 30-minute version of Auld Lang Syne on New Year 1967 and King Crimson performed their first gig the following July. Deep Purple and Thin Lizzy were regular turns, and where The Who's Pete Townshend famously met Sex Pistols Steve Jones and Paul Cook in 1977, telling them they were the only hope for rock. Despite losing its allure in the 1970s some remained loyal. Pete Townsend recorded a drunken night spent asleep outside the club in The Who's track 'Who are you?'. Sid Vicious, whose record of being involved in incidents in most of London's key venues is unparalleled, was involved in a row with Old Grey Whistle Test presenter Bob Harris. Sadly for The Pistols, the incident led to them being dropped by A&M. The club is now an unremarkable house club called Cameo.
