You may remember Colin Macrae our Route 66 winner earlier in the year. Well Colin hits the road on Friday 28th October for the road trip of a life time. He'll spend the first weekend in Chicago before moving on to St Louis, Missouri, Oklahoma City and with so many more fantastic places we're green with envy! He'll be updating us along the way but in the meantime here's a bit of an intro as to what we can expect from Colin, Rod and not forgetting Maurice Da Gnome!
Chicago the windy city is about as iconic as it comes. Not for nothing did old blue eyes himself regard it as his kind of town. From Al Capone to Barack Obama and Bill Murray to Raymond Chandler it has always had many notable and notorious residents, though it is with its musical heritage that it really takes centre stage. Billy Corrigan, Curtis Mayfield, Howling Wolf, Benny Goodman are just some of the diverse music offspring.
Though it is world renowned for its jazz, soul and now house music, for me on my first trip to the windy city, it is the blues that is the attraction. Buddy Guy, still playing at the ripe old age of 85 still gigs regularly and we plan to check out his club on the first night there, but if truth be told it is the comedy take on the ultimate American music that I am most looking forward too, the Blues Brothers. Themselves road trip veterans, who have the dubious honour of the most cars wrecked in the making of motion picture, are masters behind the wheel as well as the mic.
So with a nod to the past, myself, Rod Forsyth, a budding Spielberg in the making, and Maurice Da Gnome a globetrotting gnomad, he doesn’t say much, but the ladies love him, are going to spend the first weekend of our Route66 experience in Chicago checking out their old haunts. Our plan is to visit Second City, The Palace Hotel and Downtown, amongst others to commune with the ghost of Belushi and in homage to these madcap "mission from god..." legends we getting into character and now all we need is to pick up the Bluesmobile and we are Route 66 ready.
