Vampire Weekend
Introducing...
Vampire Weekend’s name may make them sound like some kind of gothic weep-fest, however their tracks are firmly rooted in an quirky, upbeat style.
Their name came from an amateur movie made by lead singer Ezra Koenig, which curiously featured a young Ezra fighting off vampires (replete with scary masks,) in an attempt to protect his virginity. Sounds like an interesting watch!
Another one which makes for interesting viewing is their video for A-Punk. An infectious tune with an equally energetic video, you’ll have this in your head for weeks.
Their range of influences is wide, from popular African music right through to Western classical music. The band themselves describe their sound as “Upper West Side Sowento,” with Soweto being an urban area in Johannesburg. However, the band themselves hail from New York City.
So fair, their short but illustrious career has seen them being awarded many accolades, including their single ‘Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa’ coming 67th in Rolling Stone’s list of 100 Best Songs of the year for 2007. They were honoured with a cover shot for Spin magazine, before they had even released their debut album. They have also toured in the UK with indie favourites
The Shins.
While you’re here, check out the video for Mansard Roof, featuring a sea-faring video which sees the band blasting another sunny ditty on a boat.
Like what you hear? Their album,
Vampire Weekend, is available now and there are
tickets available for upcoming tour dates.
