british beatles fan club ,beatles tribute band review 18.12.09 the counterfeit beatles

I recently caught the gig by the Counterfeit Beatles on December 18th 2009 at The Standard in Walthamstow...
I have to say that they are one of the most authentic Beatles tribute bands that I have yet seen. Not only do they have a left-handed Paul, which is always a bonus, but this group play the Beatles music with a genuine enthusiasm and passion - which can be sadly lacking in some tribute acts who simply go through the motions.
Although the Counterfeit Beatles are renowned for their stage show and costume changes, on this occasion the band treated us to something extra special...a "Hamburg" set. This was a brilliant way to start the gig, with the band wearing leather jackets and blasting their way through a catalogue of amphetamine fuelled rock & roll - the raucous atmosphere of the Hamburg clubs in 1961 was captured perfectly - only the flying bottles and fights in the crowd were missing. The band worked themselves and the audience into a sweat with an onslaught of Buddy Holly, Chuck Berry, Little Richard and numerous other rock and roll classics, plus early Lennon and McCartney stompers such as 'One After 909' and 'I Saw Her Standing There'. The band's red hot performance and the crowds reaction were equally wild!
After a much needed break the Counterfeit Beatles came back on wearing their "Shea Stadium" jackets and treated us to a wide-ranging set of Beatles material from the period 1963 to 1966. This band don't just churn out the obvious hits, but present a wide-ranging set list of superb Beatles album tracks and obscure but fabulous b-sides. It's great to hear songs that even the Beatles themselves never played live performed so well by the Counterfeit's.
The concert was exceptionally enjoyable and entertaining in both the musicianship and the humour that was put across. After two extended sets the crowd were still baying for more, so as a bonus the Counterfeit Beatles gave us a short selection from their 1967 to 1970 repertoire, keeping the place rockin' with scorching renditions of 'Get Back', 'Old Brown Shoe' and 'Revolution'...and asking if there were any "requests"? A voice yelled out 'Helter Skelter', as if a challenge to the band, which was responded to with a finger blistering version!!
The crowd went home happy...the band went home a stone lighter!

Having recently bought the (stereo) boxed set (have just posted my comments on this on a couple of the relevant threads), I've fallen in love with the Beatles all over again! For over two weeks now, I've just been revelling in all their wonderful albums! And am just so grateful that I grew up at a time when these geniuses were thrilling us with wonderful new songs - every single was different from the previous one, but as soon as you heard it, you always knew it was them! Their music will, I believe, live on forever - just as in the classical music field, Beethoven, Brahms, Mozart, Handel, Haydn and a select few others will also always be savoured by those who have ears to listen and the capacity to appreciate great art. And their influence on other artists is immense - as most of the major rock acts that have followed the Beatles have acknowledged. Because, apart from anything else, there are practically no types of music that the Beatles haven't at least dabbled in! Rock 'n' roll, jazz, rhythm and blues, heavy metal, bubblegum pop, folk, cabaret, psychedelia, reggae, ballads, classical ... And no, it's not hype - no amount of hype could keep a band selling records nearly 40 years after it broke up, and two of its members had died, including the most influential one of all. It will be most interesting to see how many of today's "hot acts" are still as widely-played and talked about, 40 years from now! Or even 20! Or even 10! Or even ... ;)

Was lucky enough to find the (stereo) box set in Guernsey for the (IMO) bargain price of £149.50 a couple of weeks ago - no VAT in the Channel Islands, the lucky so-and-so's! And even though I had all the albums already (although the first four only as LPs, because I refused to shell out for mono CDs, which were all that were available in the UK until the latest reissues), it was definitely worth it - the improvement in sound quality, particularly on the early albums, notably Help! is quite dramatic. The White Album really comes to life here - the original CD sounded quite thin, and the remaster brings out a lot of detail much more fully, and has a far greater dynamic range. Overall the CDs have a much fuller, richer sound, with the exceptions of Abbey Road and Let It Be which are only a little better-sounding - but then, the 1987 reissues of those albums sounded pretty good already. It's lovely having all the original sleeve notes, together with full details of recording history and loads of rare photographs. Another bonus is the DVD in which the group talks about the making of each album, with some nice archive footage. For any Beatlesobsessive like me, this is a real treat :)

Although strictly speaking, this isn't a cover, it's pretty obvious what Beatles' song it's parodying! And it's brilliant! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U1y9BIjTSVk The writer of the Rutles songs, Neil Innes, really knew how to write affectionate pastiches of Beatles songs; he wrote over 30 Rutles tunes, some of which I actually prefer to the Beatles' "originals"! And all the individual Beatles loved the Pre-Fab Four too - John and Yoko in particular; George Harrison even appeared in the Rutles film (as a reporter), though so heavily disguised that many people didn't recognise him! EMI cheekily demanded a share of the Rutles' royalties, which I think was taking corporate greed just a bit too far!

CaliCoyote - I would never dream of attempting to persuade anyone to like a group they dislike - apart from the futility of that, it would be a boring world indeed if we all had the same tastes! I was merely pointing out that the term "hippie music" was not an appropriate one for the Beatles. Although taste in music is an incredibly subjective and personal thing, I think we should at least try to use terminology as accurately as possible when discussing these matters. Cheers!

I don't like chicken or bell peppers either. You can't make me like them by reciting their nutritional values. The Beatles were great back in the 60s and 70s. Their music was relevant to the times. They aren't sophisticated or edgy enough for 2009.

"Hippie music"?? What an extraordinary comment! Beatles songs can't be pigeon-holed into any single category, let alone one as glib as that. That's one reason why their music is still so popular more than 40 years later (another is the sheer quality of their songwriting, which is why so many artists have covered them) - they wrote over 200 songs, spanning heavy metal (Helter Skelter, I Want You), dreamy ballads (Yesterday, I Will), cock rock (Why Don't We Do It In The Road?), jazz (Lady Madonna, You Know My Name), blues (Yer Blues), power-pop (most of the early stuff), drug-influenced psychedelia (Tomorrow Never Knows, Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds), C&W (Don't Pass Me By), folk (Norwegian Wood, You've Got To Hide Your Love Away) and soul (Got To Get You In To My Life). And that's only some of the categories and a very small range of examples! The Beatles revolutionised pop music - all bands of any note since have acknowledged their huge influence on them. Including this one - what a tribute to the Beatles that a funk/soul band should cover one of Macca's funkiest numbers! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hBBN0T5PYXY
