You might have heard an anthemic new song on your airwaves recently which might remind you a little bit of The Fray. That song is probably 'Stop And Stare' by
OneRepublic.
Formed in Colorado in 2004, the American quintet are fast becoming known as dab hands at sculpting emotive pop rock hits which take the charts by storm.
OneRepublic's first massive hit,
'Apologize', hit #1 in 16 different countries and 'Stop And Stare' isn't going to do too badly either. And no, there isn't meant to be a space between "One" and "Republic"
Frontman Ryan Tedder actually started out in the music business way back in 2001 when he won a singer-songwriter contest whilst living in the Music City of Nashville, Tennessee.
Soon after that he got a call from A-list hip hop producer,
Timbaland who wanted to take him under his wing. Tedder took the classic route of quitting his day job to put all his efforts into pursuing his dream of becoming a full-time recording artist.
He was very successful as a producer and songwriter, penning hugely successful songs including three international #1 hits for the likes of
Jennifer Lopez,
Leona Lewis and
Natasha Bedingfield but his heart pulled him in front of the microphone.
He moved to LA and formed a band with his childhood friend, guitarist Zach Filkins. They joined forces with Drew Brown (guitar), Brent Kutzle (bass, cello) and Eddie Fisher (drums) and OneRepublic was born.
After another false start where one major label deal evaporated, they amazingly got a second bite of the cherry where they were offered a deal with Timbaland. He collaborated with them on 'Apologize', and the rest is history.
