Danny Dyer To Play Sid Vicious

A new play about two punk icons will see British actor Danny Dyer playing iconic Sex Pistols bass player Sid Vicious. Sid Vicious remains a punk icon, more than three decades after his untimely death. The bass player came to epitomise the anarchic spirit of punk, picking up the instrument with no musical knowledge whatsoever. Vicious played on only a few Sex Pistols recordings, but remains instantly recognisable after perfecting the punk 'look'. A huge influence on anyone who claims to have been inspired by punk, a new play aims to link Sid Vicious with Nirvana singer Kurt Cobain. The forthcoming play will see Danny Dyer step into the shoes of the Sex Pistols legend. Dyer is following in the footsteps of Gary Coleman, who played Vicious in the much-criticised movie 'Sid And Nancy'. Speaking to BBC News after a rehearsal of the play Danny Dyer admitted that there was little in the Sid Vicious story he could sympathise with. "What could Sid do? Jump around and cut himself? He became the biggest thing in the Pistols. People would come just to see him, but why? What was it about this guy? He was talentless really," Dyer said. The new play links Sid Vicious with Kurt Cobain, but Dyer seemed to admit that he prefers the character of Cobain to the iconic bassist. "He's not like Kurt. Kurt was a twisted genius, a great songwriter, brilliant with a guitar." The play sees Sid Vicious appear to Cobain in a vision just before his death in 1994. "It's these two tortured souls in a room together, that's why it's such a mad idea," Dyer said of the production. "These two people that would have never met, two totally different generations, two people that died before they should have, in a room having it out with each other." 'Kurt And Sid' opens in London's Trafalgar Studios 2 on September 9th.
