This comes from the period when Mr Presley reminded us why he mattered. Following on from years of forgettable B-movies, this album contains some sophisticated pop music sung beautifully with a classy back-up band.
"You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling" is sung with soul and style and tracks like "Just Pretend" work the magic.
There's nothing here ground-breaking or as electric but this album is a reassuring reminder that the man was a giant of popular music. And lets not make any unkind comments about girth at this stage...

In my opinion this is among the greatest 'rock/pop albums of all time . Although it lacks the raw 'rootsiness' of Elvis's earlier recordings , its' emotional power ,as an entirety, is unequalled within Elvis's repertoire . Being chiefly comprised of a sort of rock/pop/ country crossover style , with orchestral arrangements and gospel style backing vocals , as a composite sound the result is , in my opinion rather stupendous ; its' fires being stoked by a plethora of some of the finest songs ever collected on one record . 'Just Can't Help Believing ' is a quasi spiritual experience , as are the sublime ' Mary in the Morning ' and the moving rendition of 'Bridge Over Troubled Water'. Elvis is also depicted in his more rockin' form in the shape of 'Patch it up' , and comes to light as a great singer of the truly romantic pop songs ' The Next Step is Love ' and 'Stranger in the Crowd' , with their undertones of Bacharach and classic 'swing' singing ( respectively ). Elvis's vocals were never better than on this record , and in my opinion bring the whole idiom of rock singing into a more universal context in terms of range and sheer emotive power . This whole album thus highlights how tragic his early demise , just a few years after this record was made , really was .P.S Even if you don't usually like Elvis's music , you might like this record ; as you might have guessed , it's one of my personal favourites.

Elvis was so great, he really was, and this is the best of the best. I really can't think of a better album by anybody. Abbey Road by "you know who" is close, but this is magical. In fact, I Just Can't Help Beleivin' how good it is! (The DVD is fabulous too)
