Absolute Radio: Discover real music

Wow! Picked this little beaut up today, rounded up a few bears and headed back to the ranch. Threw this on the stereo and a couple of steaks on the Foreman grill. Double wow! Great record. I gotta admit it...when track 7 kicked in...the shirts came off! Gotta love Bob, HE RULES!

I havent been this excited about an album for years! 'District Line' is an ecceptionaly good record...

I've been a fan of 'Husker Du' and 'Sugar' for years but must admit I havent followed Bob's solo stuff as closely (I dont know why). After listening to this record I will pay closer attention!

This is a rocking, heartfelt, and emotionaly intense record. Bob always has a brilliant way with melody and there are plenty of hooks in this one that quite honestly had me chocked up with the pleaure of listening to each song.

This is truly superb indie rock and wholeheartedly recommended.

Personally, I haven't heard much material lately from the former guitarist, song-writer and vocalist of Husker Du and Sugar. Really enjoyed checking out this ten track solo effort from Mould. Basically, just an all around solid alternative rock album. Notably, 'District Line' tends to reflect a bit of the attitude of early Husker Du. Tunes I was most impressed with were "Who Needs To Dream", "Again And Again" (great guitar work), "Return To Dust", the somewhat smooth "Shelter Me" and the radio friendly "Very Temporary". Some old school fans might just eat this title up. I advise to listen to sound clips (where provided) before purchasing. Should appeal to fans of Frank Black, Fagazi, Paul Westerburg and Robyn Hitchcock.

Loved Husker Du, liked the solo work, loved Sugar, hated Modulate - almost gave up on Bob, but tried Body of Work (get the bonus disc if you can - Surveyors and Cranes is a great track) which was ok, and now District Line. District Line is better than Body of Work, though still drops a star as there are still too many synths (including on the voice, as others have said). But there are some fabulous tracks on here - Stupid Now, Again and Again, The Silence Between Us, Very Temporary are all favourites, and I'd compare them to Sugar (Copper Blue, but more muscular) rather than Husker Du (the songs are nowhere near as fast as Du, and are more writerly). I'm certainly looking forward to the next, but you should probably get this one if you haven't.

Avec « District Line », l'inégalable parrain du rock indépendant américain Bob Mould signe son plus bel album depuis « Hubcap » en 1996. Ce n'est pourtant pas la qualité qui a manqué ces dernières années vu la richesse artistique de ses derniers disques, tel « The Last Dog and Ponny Show » en 1998, ainsi que le chef-d'oeuvre « Modulate » sorti en 2002, ou l'excellent « Body Of song » de 2005. Sans compter ses deux passionnantes et surprenantes expériences electro-disco-pop : « Long Playing Grooves » en 2003 et « Blowoff » en 2006 ! Mais pour ce « District Line » fruit de la collaboration avec une nouvelle maison de disque proposant une meilleure diffusion mondiale, il semblerait que Bob se soit surpassé en faisant la synthèse de ses diverses expériences musicales récentes afin de trouver la formule gagnante. Les dix morceaux de ce CD sont tous excellents, très variés et particulièrement touchants, d'autant plus si on pense à la longévité créatrice incroyable de cet artiste au rock percutant précurseur du grunge et qui a su évoluer sans renier ses origines. Des premiers enregistrements du mythique « Hüsker Dü » à sa carrière solo débutant en 1989 avec le chef-d'oeuvre « Workbook » en passant par son inoubliable second groupe « Sugar » : déjà 29 années d'activité irréprochables ! Un tel artiste est plus que précieux à une époque où le rock semble devenir de plus en plus une valeur galvaudée avec de nouveaux groupes sortant chaque semaine et qui seront pour la plupart oubliés dans trois ans. A noter que Mould vient de sortir parallèlement à « District Line » un DVD passionnant et inespéré pour ses fans nommé « Circle of Friends » qui revisite en concert une bonne partie de ses plus grands titres toutes époques confondues. A se procurer de toute urgence ! J'ai vu Bob en concert à Paris à l'Arapaho en 1998 (je suis français comme vous l'avez sans doute remarqué), le concert était formidable et je suis content d'avoir retrouvé ces sensations intenses lors du visionnage du DVD !
