Prior to knowing this album If someone had told me that Billy Ocean's 'Nights (Feel Like Getting Down)' album was one the greatest pop/soul/funk albums that I was ever likely to hear I would have laughed at them. But I have to say that the joke would have been on me because Nights is a truly magical album.

Criminally this album was overlooked at the time possibly due to the fact that half of the tracks appeared on Billy's previous album 'City Limit' (1979). 5 new tracks were added and the result is a completely satisfying album that can stand easily next to the best soul tracks of the period. Released in 1981 and cast in the same mould as Lionel Richie's 'Can't Slow Down', Michael Jackson's 'Off The Wall' & 'Thriller' and Heatwave's 'Central Heating' this album has the perfect blend of atmospheric, feel-good, danceable pop-soul that has hooks & grooves aplenty. This is far, far better than anything he did when he switched from GTO/Epic to Jive in 1984. Sure, the hits came thick & fast but Nights is a very classy album and should be rated as one of the best recordings Mr Ocean ever committed to disc.

No written review can do it justice - you really have to hear it for yourself!

The Japanese edition sounds great too and if you can find one for the right price you won't be disappointed.
