In terms of soul singers, in my humble opinion, Beverley Knight is peerless. The strength and range of her voice is simply breathtaking. This album stands as a testament to that beautiful gift with which she has been blessed.

When the album started playing, I thought I had gone back in time to the Stax era because the sound is so remininscent of that. All the tracks are great with really strong lyrics and tunes.

The outstanding tracks for me are
Ain't that a lot of love
After You
No Mans Land
Black Butta
Time is on my Side
Back to You.

I was wondering if Black Butta was her homage to Ike and Tina Turners' Nutbush City Limits because the opening sounds very similar to that. Anyway, it is a foot stomping track and as the lyrics says "spread it all over". This album is all over me and I cannot stop playing it - I love it!

I am so pleased that Beverley Knight got the chart recognition for this album, which both it and she thoroughly deserve. This album is in a different league from many of those out at the moment. She is a simply a fantastic singer singing fantastic songs. Highlights are 'No Man's Land' and 'Black Butta', but no song is bad. Buy this album-you won't regret it!

To a long-time old school blues and soul freak like me, Beverley Knight has always been just a slightly superior artist of the variety usually (and to me unfathomably) referred to as 'RnB' so this attempt to produce a 'classic' soul album is a dangerous undertaking, to put it mildly, especially with the inclusion of songs associated with Irma Thomas and Aretha. So let it be said that this is a brilliant piece of work, with both the classic numbers and Beverley's own material done superbly, with her own musicians augmented by Nashville luminaries to good effect, and a bit of Ronnie Wood here and there. One of the records of the year in my humble estimation and a must-buy for soul aficionados!

....the album that Beverley Knight has been threatening to make for a long time - she proves here that she can hold her own with and in most cases top any classic American soul singers. I really admire BK for not going along with all the other R&B wannabees or singers in their 30's plus who feel the only way forward is middle of the road smooth bland slush. I hope this album gets some good airplay - people will see that BK is a performer to be reckoned with. A few years ago I went to a Courtney Pine concert at the RFH and Beverley guested - she blew us all away with her great voice and choice of material. This latest album is a great selection of songs - new and old - her interpretation of Time is on my Side is pure classic - Fantastic!!!!

Great great album. All of beverleys albums are excellent but I always found she shined so much more on the pure soul tracks than the pop or RnB crossover type songs and this new album is ALL about the soul. It digs right into Beverleys musical roots, Gospel tinged Soul a la Aretha and Sam cooke and she does it justice amazingly. Her cover of "Time is on my side" is a highlight as is "no mans land", "Everytime you see me smile", next single "after you", the stomping "black butta" and my personal fave which for some bizzare reason is a bonus track "Uptight" her voice is amazing on this track! Highly recommended!
