Beck Blogs
(66 views)Happy Thursday, VIPs. Let's hope today gets off to a quick start, sprints into night, and is over and done with in the blink of an eye. I have something to do on Friday that I just can't wait to get to!! ;-)
On to the Obscure Song of the Day...
Beck Hansen (born Bek David Campbell) is an American musician, singer-songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist known by the stage name Beck. With a pop art collage of musical styles, oblique and ironic lyrics, and postmodern arrangements incorporating samples, drum machines, live instrumentation and sound effects, Beck has been hailed by critics and the public throughout his musical career as being amongst the most creative and idiosyncratic musicians of the 1990s and 2000s alternative rock.
He rose to underground popularity with his early works, which combined social criticism (as in "MTV Makes Me Want to Smoke Crack" and "Deep Fried Love") with musical and lyrical experimentation. He first earned wider public attention for his breakthrough single "Loser," a 1994 hit.
Beck has cited The Cars, Bob Dylan, Mantronix, Gary Wilson, Pussy Galore, Willie Dixon, Bill Broonzy, and Sonic Youth among his influences. Two of Beck's most popular and acclaimed recordings were "Odelay" (1996) and "Sea Change" (2002). "Odelay" was awarded Album of the Year by American magazine Rolling Stone and by UK publications NME and Mojo. "Odelay" also received a Grammy nomination for Best Album.
Normally, my Obscure Song of the Day blogs are somewhat longer than what is here today, but, since Beck seems to be a simple, straight-forward type, I've decided to present his blog that way too.
The problem I've had with this blog is in finding one Beck song to post. He has so many great songs and so many great and creative videos. Sometimes we get treated to both. I think the song I have selected for today is just that - a great song and a great video. I hope you enjoy the show, sun-eyed girl!! ;-)
Without further adeiu...from his 2005 album "Guero," here's Beck with "Girl".....

(847 views)How can it be that only two Virgin VIP's love the fantastic 3-piece group Little Barrie? Is it that me and 62jonesy have terrible taste in music, or has the criminal lack of airplay given to this group resulted in none of you having heard (of) them?
Their music is a great mix of Blues, Funk, Rock n Roll and Soul influences. At various times when listening to their albums I find different artists spring to mind without them ever sounding exactly like any of them, forinstance Beck, Red Hot Chili Peppers & Eddie Cochran. Perhaps their strength of diversity is also their weakness as radio stations can't pidgeon-hole them so therefore they fall thru' the cracks. This seems to be the case with many artists I like, such as The Bees and Lord Large. They appear happier playing groups like Snow Patrol & Coldplay who seem to have just one sound and pace to their songs (well to my ears anyway).
Little Barrie have supported Paul Weller, Morrissey & Primal Scream in recent years, all of whom have given them their seal of approval, with the Primals even inviting Barrie Cadogan to guest on guitar for them, so they must be doing something right.
It may well be that some of you will be unimpressed, but I'm sure there will be quite a few who if you gave them a chance would love 'em like me & 62jonesy do. At the moment you're not being given a chance to make up your mind either way coz someone has deemed them not worthy of airtime, so please check at least some of the links below and let me know what you think.
Cheers :-)
