Athlete gig

Hi, following the theme for 2009 "the year of gigs" I was checking gigs coming to Nottingham and saw Athlete, which is a band I don't really follow but the music doesn't make me throw up! Bonus lol

13th June 2009 Rescue Rooms Nottingham

So I got the last ticket and I am going all on my own :(

Is anyone going to the Nottingham gig?

I have never been to the Rescue Rooms for a gig, so will review after, if it is anything like Rock City I will be stuck to the floor!! ha ha

OBSCURE SONG OF THE DAY - ATHLETE

We're at the end of another one, VIPs. Time to put up your feet and relax a while before donning your dancing shoes and painting the town red tomorrow night.

Years before the serene single "Wires" propelled them to the top of the U.K. charts, Athlete was yet another Oasis-styled outfit from South London. Childhood friends Carey Willets (bass), Joel Pott (vocals/guitar), Steve Roberts  (drums), and Tim Wanstall (keyboards) formed the group in early 2000, initially modeling their sound after that of the famed Gallagher brothers. The Deptford-based Athlete then settled on a promising brand of experimental indie rock, and their self-titled EP appeared on Regal Recordings in March 2002.

Their debut single "Westside" was a quick hit, paving the way for another single, "You Got the Style," which cracked the Top 40 in June. Parlophone took notice and promptly signed Athlete, who entered the studio with producer in late 2002 to record their first studio LP.

"Vehicles and Animals" marked the band's major-label debut in April 2003, eventually spinning off four singles and garnering the band a prestigious nomination for the Mercury Music Prize. Athlete's sophomore effort, 2005's "Tourist", was an even bigger success. Displaying similarities to Coldplay's reflective songwriting, the album rose to the top of the U.K. Albums Chart during its first week, with "Wires" peaking at #4 and the follow-up single, "Half Light," reaching #16. "Tourist" eventually went double platinum, and Athlete toured in support of the record until spring 2006. Upon returning home, the band opted to build a personal studio and remain close to the friends and family they'd left behind on the previous tour.

Sessions for Athlete's third album began in May 2006, and the self-produced, experimental "Beyond the Neighbourhood"  arrived in September 2007.

We just don't hear this one enough anymore. Here's Athlete with their 2002 hit "You Got the Style"....

Chart Roundup and New Releases - 10 September 2007

We've got a new #1 in the Virgin Radio Album Chart this week as those suburban knights, Hard-Fi storm to the top with their second album, Once Upon A Time In The West.

Hot on their heels are Athlete with their third album Beyond The Neighbourhood. Last week's #1, Hand Built By Robots by Newton Faulkner, drops to #3. After making a return from her supposed demise at the Mercury Prize Award ceremony, Amy Winehouse continues to linger at #5 with Back To Black.

Plain White T's are a third new entry just behind him at #4 with Every Second Counts and their smash hit acoustic ballad single 'Hey There Delilah' has risen to #2 in the Singles Chart. There is just one other new entry as The Proclaimers totter in at #13 with Life With You.

There should be some new entries this weekend from Natalie Imbruglia, as she releases her best of set, Glorious: The Singles 1997-2007 and you can be sure that Rooney will be there with Calling The World and Rumble Strips might pop in with Girls & Weather.

Check out the Virgin Radio Album Chart on Saturday at midday with Ben Jones.

Virgin Radio. Duh.

How come VR only ever play one song by Mika, and that's Grace Kelly. I am so frustrated! I would like all music lovers to comment on this page please. Thats why I am tagging it with every single artist I can think of. Please leave a comment. Mail VR. Do anything you can to make them play more. I'm sorry if you don't like Mika, but comment anyway. Goodbye.
