Got this on Amazon for 98p so can't complain too much, but for me 1977 & Free All Angels were easily their best albums. This album is where they changed direction from pop/punk to a darker, more heavy sound which continued through to the later Meltdown.

Nu-Clear Sounds is hugely under-rated. In my opinion it far surpasses the quality of 1977 and on an equal par with Free All Angels, but in a very different style. Overall it has an obviously dark theme, reflecting Tim Wheeler's mood at the period when he had writer's block and things were't all well with Ash.The album starts powerfully with 'Projects,' which immediately shows that Wheeler's song writing is brilliant, even at it's worst. 'Low Ebb' is another great song with very dark lyrics and in grunge-style. Other songs such as 'Wildsurf' and 'Jesus Says' are also outstanding. The main strength through this album is how suited Tim Wheeler's voice is to the lyrics of the music. His fragile singing is shown especially in songs such as 'Folk Song,' which is undeniably excellent, and 'Aphrodite.' It's the most listened-to CD in my collection; no Ash fan should be without it.

I am a huge fan of Ash, after owning their singles collection. But this seems very average when you hear their singles collection. This isn't a bad album, by any means, but I know that Ash are an extremely talented band who pretty much are rock music over in Ireland. If I had not heard the colossal talent of their singles, I would have given it another star, but since I have heard them at their best I can tell you that is, quite frankly, not it. There are however some tracks that made me pleased I did invest in it, those being 'Death Trip 21', which is just excellent, and 'Burn Out', a fantastic song. 'Low Ebb' is another pretty good track, and so are singles 'Numbskull', 'Jesus Says' and 'Wildsurf', which I'd obviously already heard, owning the singles collection, 'Intergalactic Sonic 7's'. But the remaining tracks seem to drag it down a bit. Not bad, but if you want their best, go for any of their other albums, especially 'Meltdown', their new album which will be released this Monday! Can't wait for that. Nu-Clear Sounds however, is something only for those die-hard fans of Ash.

It got some pretty bad press at the time of release due to charlotte joining and a definate change in sound, but i still think Nu-Clear is a very good album. 'Jesus Says' is the most immediately prominent track on the album. It's actually a very good song. I'm Gonna Fall is a very melodic song, but i think it's pretty, it was one of the first songs i learned on guitar. Infact, i later went on to form a band with 3 other ash fans, initially playing songs from this album and 1977. Which brings me onto numbskull, a delight to play on guitar, a delight to listen to. The undoubted best point of this album is the transition from the mellow 'folk song' through to the grinding distorted guitar at the beginning of numbskull. It's just fantastic. Overall a good album, it's the stage where ash were developing from what they were for 1977 and trailer into what they were with free all angels. But still the album is significantly different from all of the others, and still really good. It's definately worth owning if you like ash and indie/rock.

When i bought this album I knew about all the bad press this album had recieved compared to their others but then on the other hand i really liked the singles that appeared on the Sonic 7's Greatest hits album so i didnt know what to expect. To be honest what i got was an album that i felt to be a bit of a disapointment. Jesus Says.... is possibly my faveourite ash song and wildsurf is a good poppy song but it seems to go against the dark grain of the album. Its not an album i would recommend, even to a fellow Ash fan, stick to their other releases
