okay so back in London, and back in a jumper for the first time in a week. Have to say what an amazing trip we all had to Melbourne. Thursday 19 November is Les Paul tribute day, in memory of the great man who helped shape the sound of rock, with his innovation in the development of the solid guitar body.

On 13 August 2009, Les Paul, acclaimed guitar player, entertainer and inventor, passed away from complications of severe pneumonia at White Plains Hospital in New York, surrounded by family and loved ones. He had been receiving the best available treatment through this final battle and in keeping with his persona, he showed incredible strength, tenacity and courage.

One of the foremost influences on 20th century sound and responsible for the world’s most famous guitar, the Les Paul model, Les Paul’s prestigious career in music and invention spans from the 1930s to the present.

Though he’s indisputably one of America’s most popular, influential, and accomplished electric guitarists, Les Paul is best known as an early innovator in the development of the solid body guitar. His groundbreaking design would become the template for Gibson’s best-selling electric, the Les Paul model, introduced in 1952. Today, countless musical legends still consider Paul’s iconic guitar unmatched in sound and prowess. Among Paul’s most enduring contributions are those in the technological realm, including ingenious developments in multi-track recording, guitar effects, and the mechanics of sound in general.

Hello from Rome, and the world premiere of Angels and Demons

Hi chaps, this is Ben talking to you from Rome and a heartbeat away from the epicentre of the catholic church, the Vatican City. I have been lucky enough to have been invited out here to be one of the first in the world to watch the long awaited new film from Tom Hanks and director Ron Howard, the film version of Dan Brown's best seller 'Angels and Demons'.

You don't need to have read the book, (although 65 million people have) to have heard the controversy this book has caused. Catholics denounce it as 'evil' and 'an insult to the history of the catholic church'. Others call it, 'just a good bit of fiction'. It is worth noting that it is exactly that....a work of fiction, but Dan Brown has a great skill of causing controversy by wonderfully blending fact with fiction and conspiracy theory so that the reader has no idea where fact ends and fiction begins......that is why so many of us on holiday, for example, have read these books and fallen,hook line and sinker for the tales he tells.

After the success (box office rather than critical) of The Da Vinci Code, a sequel was always likely. It is worth pointing out here that although A&D the book is written before DVC, the new film happens to occur after the first film......kinda makes sense I suppose!

So, what can I tell you other than Tom Hanks is one of the nicest people I have been fortunate enough to spend time with. Well, I can't say much as I am sworn to secrecy like one of the characters from a Dan Brown's novel and I certainly don't want to be branded by a hot iron marked SONY. I would strongly suggest going to see it, it is a fascinated yarn, wonderfuly shot and let's be honest Tom Hanks doesn't really make bad films (other than maybe 'The Burbs').

The film has it's world premiere tonight here in Rome, I am attending and will be talking more to the cast later, all of which you can hear on Absolute next week. But tension here is high after the latest round of verbal attacks from the Vatican. It is no secret that the church has actively discouraged Rome from allowing the film access to the city. Official word is that "the Vatican has no influence over the city of Rome", being as it is a seperate country, but film permits were cancelled at the last minute, camera tape confiscated, and even the hotel I am staying in has been asked to remove all posters of the film to avoid offending the papal meeting taking place in the same hotel! Isn't the phrase "all publicity is good publicity"!!!

In my conversations with Tom Hanks, Ewan McGregor and director Ron Howard, which you will be able to hear next week on AR, we discuss the fascinations of the timeless battle between science and religion, how the film coped with the filming restrictions, the difficulty in making a film millions of us have already played out in our own imaginations and the low down on the next Robert Langdon story called 'The Lost Symbol' due out in September.
