The Young Knives

Live review V Festival 2008

The Young Knives played on the Virgin Mobile Union Tent at the Virgin Mobile V Festival 2008 and we have a live review below.

If you haven't seen the Young Knives before, you're excused for being just a little sceptical. After all, we hear you think with disbelief, what are three geeks with hornrimmed glasses and a penchant for tweed suits with braces gonna do to the Virgin Mobile Union tent? The answer is, very probably, they are going to blow your sorry little heads off.

They won a competition three years ago to apperar at the V Festival and no they are back playing here tonight and in honour of the occasion the proper suits and bow ties have vome out. See, the Young Knives aren't just great musicians, they're also very funny.

Apparently, they are 'the greatest band ever - better than you!' and we should be prepared for 'the greatest indie rock set' Fair enough.

At this point we're not quite sure whether they've actually already had too good a time at the backstage bar or whether they just talk like that all the time. Slurry that is, and when we get this line: 'You've come to the right place if you like sex. It's just like Spearmint Rhino but without the girls', there's nothing left to do but laugh and listen to such proper indie rock tunes as Terra Firma, Counters, Hot Summer and Turn tail (for which they even have a three piece string section on call).

So, if you're taking nothing but a pickled liver and a fried brain away from this weekend in Hylands Park, still keep this in mind: Never, oh no never, judge a tweed jacket by its lining ever again.
