Introducing...
The Twang are from Birmingham and their baggy indie rock has been hitting your airwaves for the past few weeks.
After signing to B-Unique, the same label as
Kaiser Chiefs,
The Automatic and
The Ordinary Boys, you can be sure to hear much more of The Twang in coming months. Indeed, they just won the Phillip Hall Radar Award at the 2007 NME Awards.
It's been said that they sound like a relaxed mix between infamous Madchester legends
The Stone Roses and
Happy Mondays but the band insist that they relate more with
Oasis and
The Streets. Both comparisons hold some truth.
With singers Phil Etheridge and Martin Saunders delivering vocals that are melancholy and plaintive one moment but then veer into a swashbuckling snarl the next and the guitarwork of Stu Hartland providing a swirling backdrop you can see why people are saying what they are.
The NME were the first on the scene with The Twang as they featured in an article about up-and-coming bands in the West Midlands but it was coming second to
Mika in BBC News Website' Sound of 2007 poll that really launched their name into the limelight.
The band - completed by bassist Jon Watkin and drummer Matt Clinton - don't make much of all the hype. They've made a point of their "normal" status and they reckon that as they're one of the few "lad bands" around at the moment that that is what will be picked up on.
Decide for yourself! You can watch the video to their debut single 'Wide Awake'
right here while a debut album is to follow later in the year.
