V Festival 2007 review
With lots of rowdy fans bracing the drizzle, Captain launch into their afternoon performance in a cheery mood and a well-matched look in black and white clothes.
Rik is sporting a baseball cap more suited to a much brighter day, and Clare is dressed in something that makes her look a bit like a prim schoolteacher, but who cares what they look like? They sound great!
It's still early but the crowd grows throughout the set, and people wander over with their first beer of the day.
The live vocals are faultless and the appreciation from the crowd keeps the band upbeat and entertaining. And they obviously like getting in with the fans, because apparently Captain have a long-standing tradition of getting an onlooker onto the stage for a bit of a boogy. The condition, though, is that you've got to be in fancy dress. So although it's a festival and people are generally here to do things like put on stupid outfits, they take a while to spot someone.
Then there's a bit of an issue with security not wanting to let the lucky handpicked guy through. Rik keeps the momentum going with 'Ok, we'll play a song while you guys deliberate' and moves straight on to another number. By the time they've finished, Nick from the crowd in a cowboy hat has joined them. And fair play to him, he makes a confident effort for someone not used to performing in front of thousands of festival-goers. Though it's got to be said, he maybe didn't have the best choice of moves - the era of the air guitar is kind of over...
