The judges' notes said...
"[The station] was a very early convert in the mid-1990s to the Web, and a leader from the start. It has diversified across digital platforms, and as well as the web now broadcasts on digital radio and is among the first stations to trial the cutting edge Visual Radio platform developed by Nokia for mobile phones. It was also the first radio station in the world to launch its own browser toolbar. This has helped increase weekly listener visitors by 300%. It also has 100,000 "VIP" listeners who interact via email and text messaging. According to independent radio audtiors Arbitron, it is the world's most listened to online radio station. All this online activity aided [the station] in the offline world, where time spent listening to the station increased by 22.9% in London last year. It has recently moved in "podcasting" via RSS feeds and and streaming over GPRS/3G mobile."
