Originally christening themselves The Sex Maggots, The guys had twenty minutes to come up with an alternative name after a prudish club owner refused to let them perform back in 1986.
Renaming as the Goo Goo Dolls, and toning down their punk roots, the band went on to forge a very successful rock career throughout the US, with their 5th and 6th albums going double and triple platinum respectively.

Although it was their 1998 track, Iris, from the film ‘ City of Angels’ that made a name for the group internationally, the band are still going strong, having recently released their latest album ‘Let Love In’ to good reviews, 20 years after forming.

The Goo Goo Dolls play a wet V Festival

It's been raining all morning but The Goo Goo Dolls pop up on the main stage of V Festival and cheer everyone up immediately in this perfect British dancing weather.

You might only know one song by The Goo Goo Dolls ('Iris') but there are many more reasons to see them and there is a huge crowd already.

After 21 years together as a band, their musicianship is second to none and trust me when I say they're not just a one-hit wonder. No band can last this long of the back of one song.

After a completely sold out show at the huge Hammersmith Apollo a couple of days earlier they're in great form and when they play 'Slide' - another song taken from the same album as 'Iris' - the crowd goes wild throwing their rock horns in the air while the rain spits.

Frontman John Rzeznik, behind his Bon Jovi hair builds the crowd up gently with loads of great soft rock anthems and ballads before hitting home with the final sucker punch. Yep, you guessed it, 'Iris' closes the set.

Rzeznik knows its their biggest song and builds it up perfectly. Everyone goes wild as you'd expect and sings their hearts out to this favourite.

After being confirmed for the O2 Wireless Festival in the summer, frontman John Rzeznik chats to Ben Jones on Most Wanted all the way from Buffalo, New York.

They talk about going bonkers on tour, why one of the biggest bands around just keeps coming back to the UK and the craziest tour rider request (included in John's signature dish). Listen to the interview.
