Review: Reading Festival - 25 August '07

Everyone knows exactly what they're going to get with RHCP. It should be the safest best of all the headliners at this year's Reading Festival but something goes wrong.

Nobody near the back could hear the music because singer Anthony Kiedis danced around too vigorously during opening song, 'Can't Stop', trampling over and disconnecting a power cable. Whoops.

It might have seemed like the band was just jamming away self-indulgently but that wasn't the case at all. The band actually just didn't know what was going on! All was fixed after four songs though and it was business as usual.

Despite the volume problems, Red Hot Chili Peppers didn't play the kind of greatest hits set that everyone expected, instead preferring to focus on cuts from their recent albums, Californication and Stadium Arcadium.

This meant that many of their older fans' favourite songs, i.e. the ones from BloodSexSugarMagik, were absent. Understandably this didn't go down too well at all and garnered bos from several sections of the crowd.

To their credit, however, the jams they did perform segued seamlessly into some of their more recent hits to much acclaim and on the whole, their performance was solid, if uneventful.

Maybe we can put this slightly disappointing performance down to the fact that they've been touring incessantly for 18 months. There's always going to be more to come though. It's RHCP!
