Hullo!

It's been hypothesised that the reason Beatlemania took America by storm following their appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show was that they were a much-needed burst of excitement and joy for a nation mourning JFK.

Things have been pretty grim here, of late; gruesome news stories and economic woes, so we thought we'd try a dose of the same medicine that cured the U.S. in '64 - we invited a Beatle onto the Hometime Show.

Unfortunately Ringo never replied (maybe the letter was postmarked after 20th October), so we had to make do with the most successful musician and composer in popular music history, Sir Paul McCartney. Since it's nice for him to get out of the house, he's popped in to see us every day this week.

He's had various pseudonyms over the years - Paul Ramon, Percy Thrillington, Apollo C. Vermouth - but his latest album is released under the name 'The Fireman'. It's a project with the producer Youth, they've made a couple of electronic LPs in the past, but the latest one 'Electric Arguments', released on Monday, is some of McCartney's most interesting and experimental work in years.

It's always a pleasure to have Macca to visit, even if he does devour the entire contents of our staff biscuit tin, and after he's popped in on Friday, you'll be able to download a special podcast of the whole week's interviews here. Hear about his underwear exploits with Fidel Castro, his thoughts on Ringogate, and we've borrowed a guitar - we're hoping he might play us something special.

Pete Mitchell recently presented a very special edition of Razor Cuts, featuring a full hour-long retrospective on the career of Sir Paul McCartney - the first Beatle to appear on the show. You can now listen back to the whole interview, right here.The show looks back at some of the highlights of McCartney's 35-year solo career as well as talking in depth about his first album in four years, and twentieth overall; 'Chaos and creation in the back yard'. The new record is a taut, striking, occasionally dark affair and genuine return to form, produced skilfully by Nigel Godrich (Radiohead, Beck) and harking back to McCartney's early '70s solo work. Sir Paul McCartney picked up his 2008 BRIT Award for Outstanding Contribution To Music and he took the time out to perform an interview, backstage at the ceremony.

He talks about finally accepting the award, the variety of songs he's able to play now and how much he anjoyed the likes of Kaiser Chiefs and Kylie at the British version of the Oscars.
